Every country has their own specificities for the management of PhD studens. The french system is an interseting example, with different approaches, some focused on industrial development of innovative technologies, or others on more academical or fundamental aspects of science. The disparity in fundings, directions also mimics this disparity in topics, so that the research activities operated by the student can be adapted to the context of his research and his work environment.

The field of DNA data storage is at the crossing of several disciplinary fields. This article aims at representing the specificities of inter-disciplinary research from the perspective of a student that would have limited knowledge about some of these fields.
